While their use is increasingly rapidly, planted walls are only in their infancy—at least compared to Europe. Over there, particularly in Germany, France and Switzerland, planted walls are popping up all over. In this presentation Dave MacKenzie will talk about the "benefits and value", including economic, social, environmental, nutritional and human-health, of putting plants on walls. He will dig deep into the horticultural aspects of making them work in northern climates, and will discuss soil, plant selections, plant-pairing, and how to care for them. Included in his presentation are ideas for "good design" and how to avoid common mistakes—valuable information gleaned from testing hundreds of plants and figuring out what it takes to be successful in our ever-changing Michigan climate.
