Kids love to try things - but often need repeated exposure to new foods to build acceptance and interest. The school cafeteria is a great place to expose children to new foods that they may not have had a chance to try at home.

During a taste test, students are offered a small sample of a fruit or vegetable in the cafeteria during lunchtime.  Taste tests follow Northwest Michigan’s Harvest of the Month to further connect students to the local food system.  Students who taste the item have the opportunity to vote on whether they tried, liked, or loved it!  Results are shared with the school community and food service staff, and ideally guide placement of new recipes on the school lunch menu.

FoodCorps service member, Erin, will be leading the tasting.

MSU Extension Grand Traverse County is one of six local service sites for FoodCorps in Michigan. Service sites are FoodCorps community partners who are responsible for guiding service members as they make measureable differences in supporting school health. FoodCorps partners with school communities to create healthy school food environments with staying power by transforming students’ experience of food in schools in three key areas: hands-on learning, healthy school meals and school-wide culture of health.
