Description of the Event:
ReLeaf Michigan, a non-profit tree organization, is partnering with the City of Royal Oak, Meininger Park Neighborhood Association, and the Michigan DNR Urban and Community Forestry Program to plant 18 trees on Saturday, September 9 at Meininger and Fernwood Parks in Royal Oak, MI.
Organizers are looking for volunteers to help on Saturday morning. Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes, comfortable clothing and bring a shovel and other appropriate tools. The group will meet in Southwest corner of Meininger Park (Maxwell and Farnum) at 8:45 a.m. to sign in and enjoy light refreshments. ReLeaf Michigan will demonstrate how to properly plant a tree at 9:00 a.m. The group will split up from there to do the plantings.
This project is the vision of Royal Oak resident Andrea Makar, who created the Meininger Park Neighborhood Association to improve and maintain the park for generations to come. Each year, trees are lost due to disease and storm damage. This project will plant new trees of varying species to help the park retain its natural forest-like feel. Andrea has raised money through a crowdfunding site called Patroncity to plant 18 trees between Meininger Park and Fernwood Park.
ReLeaf Michigan, a non-profit organization, partners with communities statewide to replenish our tree canopies through tree planting events. Trees provide many benefits to communities such as shade, improving economic vitality of commercial districts, absorbing storm water, and reducing carbon in our atmosphere.
Special thanks to city officials, as well as Andrea Makar and the Meininger Park Neighborhood Association, for their much appreciated collaboration to enhance this wonderful community.
